CLUBLAND: DECEMBER 2013

Z.D.S.

Z.D.S.

Rather than a useless and expected ho-hum New Year’s guide (let’s face it, the decision on where to go is mostly made last minute anyway), you’ll need this list before then to rescue you from the screams of shopped-out children (or their parents), one too many eggnog lattes, or those boring office parties featuring closet lush co-workers and “Christmas Carol Karaoke.”

SLOWDJS 12th ANNIVERSARY PARTY ft. ZOMBIE DISCO SQUAD – DECEMBER 6, SHINE NIGHTCLUB

Now acronymically tight as simply Z.D.S., the man formerly known as Zombie Disco Squad (one of two DJs originally known as such) continues to epitomize career reinvention in more than just name. From progressive trance to pumping electro to the Dirtybird house he plays today, each style has been executed with technical excellence, which the producer has in common with the collective bringing him to town.

Celebrating a huge 12 years together, the Slowdjs have risen in mention over the past year or two partly due to the fresh curation of their ‘Slowcast’ podcast series. All the best to this talented crew through 2014 and beyond!

ADBUSTERS LAUNCH/YEAR-END PARTY w/BASTET, JONATHON JULIAN, GAMEBOY & BREADHANDS – DECEMBER 13, THE ASTORIA PUB

If the season of giving (’til you can’t give any more) is resulting in more calls from credit collectors than cozy Christmas cheer, you might be ready for a change of pace, for which Adbusters has just the thing: a launch/year-end party at the historic Astoria. First 50 people to pay cover get a free copy of the next issue (“The Big Ideas of 2047”) and a warm fuzzy feeling before being treated to some solid tunes by local selectors Bastet, Jonathon Julian, Gameboy and Breadhands.

RUSTIE – DECEMBER 19, THE ELECTRIC OWL

As part of a miniscule North American tour totalling just six shows in December, Rustie blesses us with his presence six days before Christmas. One of the many creatively blessed Glaswegian geniuses providing our scene with inspiration, Rustie (a.k.a. Russell Whyte) continues to give back to his homeland with the lease of his tight new song “Boatsss” to the Everything is New project. Everything is New is a short-term album and film run with proceeds going to Scottish Love in Action, a charity helping needy children in India. The first release, planned for January 20th, is BOATS: a double album with tunes donated by YACHT, Four Tet, Deerhoof, and more.

JUSTIN MARTIN & LONGWALKSHORTDOCK w/RYAN WELLS & ABASI – DECEMBER 20, CELEBRITIES NIGHTCLUB

Clearly Blueprint and Intimate want to send this year out with a bang, as I can think of no two artists who truly love and are loved back by their fans more than these ones. Justin Martin is notorious for abandoning the decks at that pivotal peak to lose his shit among the rest of us, and if you’re ever seen a Longwalk set, you’ll know that his fans even have their own rituals (bring a pack of sparklers and trust me). When these two play the same room, CRAZINESS WILL ENSUE.
