Canadian-raised and British-educated producer Jonathan Bierman has hit his stride with his latest Dark Arps release, Hanging on the Wall. Through these four bass-heavy bangers, sure to ignite the passions of West-Coast speaker worshipers into the wee hours of the morning, Bierman’s predilection for cleanly produced beats and tasteful cinematic sampling shines. All four tracks make the listener mentally stretch their legs, their 4/4 progressive techno beats oozing from woofers with the kind of snap that subconsciously triggers muscle memory in veteran ravers, compelling one to rise and start kicking. Set over ominous British vocal samples, reminding one not to get too high with the highs or too low with the lows, “The Wheel” brings the EP to a peak, lacing progressive techno with a certain gangsta attitude. Granted, there isn’t a lot of crossover potential here, as this EP was born in and of a rather specific albeit global scene, but it will serve that scene well.
