Happy New Year, babies, and welcome to the Year of the Wooden Horse – apparently also the Year of the Empty Wallet, if January’s events calendar is any indication.
EPROM – JAN 16 @ FORTUNE SOUND CLUB
With the heavy sub-frequencies from second album Halflife (just dubbed Mixmag’s December Album of the Month) relocating him to a half-drone, half-8-bit sonic boom department all his own, on Christmas Eve EPROM (a.k.a. Sander Dennis) released an intriguing mashup of A$AP Ferg’s “Shabba” (from the re-release featuring the real Shabba Ranks) and a little Four Tet, via Twitter. More reminiscent of his earlier trappy inclinations, here’s hoping he drops that B2B “Regis Chillbin” at Fortune on the 16th.
EGYPTRIXX w/EVY JANE & CHAPEL SOUND – JAN 17 @ THE ELECTRIC OWL
Speaking of avant-garde frequencies and artists who push their music into groundbreaking territory, Night Slugs wizard Egyptrixx, a.k.a. Toronto’s David Psutka, is well-known for his expertly textured minimalist intensity and synthesized melodic futurism. From 2011’s dancier debut Bible Eyes to the placement of the space between the notes of late 2013 follow-up A/B Til Infinity, Psutka has elevated his passion for the abstract into a comprehensible continuity, absolutely not to be missed in a perfect booking alongside like-minded locals Evy Jane and Chapel Sound.
KASTLE w/KLINE, DUBCONSCIOUS & DECIBEL EMPIRE – JAN 22 @ CELEBRITIES NIGHTCLUB
In common with the other musicians on this list, Kastle (a.k.a. Barrett Richards) is a consummate gentleman. His Facebook Christmas photo alone, where in a suave green blazer and burgundy tie he cheersed AC Slater with a Scotch on the rocks, serves as visual representation of the tailored work he insists upon both from himself as Kastle, and from the signees of his label, Symbols Recordings, ever busier throughout last year and undoubtedly moreso in this one. This night could almost be billed a double-header what with local maestro Kline shedding heaters all over XLR8R late last year, so get those tickets early.
SEQUENTIAL CIRCUS 14 – JAN 25 @ OPEN STUDIOS
Everyone’s favourite live PA jam brings the fam back together for the 14th time. With everything from orchestral trip hop and ‘electro-house-hop-dirty-break-rock’ to acid and breakcore brought by musicians MUX, Dark Arps, Kinetic Diction, RiDylan, Science of Defiance, and The Silver Factory, and with Dark Arps’ new album Hanging On The Wall currently charting in the Top 10 across Canada, this one should be especially fun (and full).
