Some exciting things are happening in the world of dance for the beginning of 2014 in Calgary. Of course, a visit from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be a treat that dance fans are looking forward to. There’s also a lot going on in the local scene that you’ll want to check out. Here’s what we’ve got for January.
Romeo and Juliet
January 17th – 19th

It’s the Shakespeare classic told through dance and the music of Sergei Prokofiev. Anyone who preferred the Zeffirelli version of R+J to Baz Luhrmann’s will love this production. The ballet takes the story of the world’s most famous star-crossed lovers from Shakespearean English to the universal languages of music and dance.
January 21st – 25th
presented by Alberta Ballet
Ballet is a dance form that is anything but static and Up Close is proof of just that. Three contemporary ballets are on the bill for each evening. If you’ve always thought of ballet as prim and proper, spend an evening at Up Close and see if they change your mind.
January 23rd – 25th
presented by UofC Dance
The University of Calgary’s Dance program continues to bring some of the most exciting professional dancers from both Calgary and across Canada. In their long-running Professional Series this month, they’ll be featuring the work of their own faculty members, Michele Moss (Decidedly Jazz Danceworks) and Melanie Kloetzel (kloetzel&co.). The shows will take place at the University Theatre and are $10 for students/seniors or $15 for adults.
