CLUBLAND: FEBRUARY 2014

SweaterBeats_3Perhaps it’s the fabled “Power of Love” Huey Lewis made famous; perhaps it’s no more than selective sentimentality. Call it what you may, but this month, the best events magically fit in with February’s unavoidable Valentine’s Day theme.

KITTENS w/CHERCHEZ, DANIELLE BETH & LIL INDIA – FEBRUARY 14th, FORTUNE SOUND CLUB

Is there anything hotter than strong women in positions of power? Touring DJ for Kid Cudi and private DJ for Usher is L.A.’s Lauren Abedini, a.k.a. Kittens, a fierce cat lover and Low End Theory alumni who’s gone from being a babe behind the decks to a powerhouse headliner signed to Huh, What & Where and topping recent bills alongside DJ Sliink, DJ Craze, Teebs, and Chief Keef. On Valentine’s Day, she fronts a smokin’ all-female bill in Vancouver also featuring Cherchez, Danielle Beth, and Lil’ India.

HOT SINCE ’82 w/TIMELINE & MATTILDA HO – FEBRUARY 15th, CELEBRITIES NIGHTCLUB

OK OK, having hot in the name might seem like a dead giveaway, but both the music and the man known as Hot Since ’82 sells sex even better than his moniker’s steamy synonym – although the title of his recent album, Little Black Book, does a tidy job too. The gorgeous Daley Padley (Google him, girls) has a talent for blending opaquely patterned rhythms into danceable deep house so smooth, you’ll find yourself unstoppable, which will probably come in handy the day after V-day. Check out his remix of Shadow Child’s “So High” (sampling Toni Braxton’s sultry vocals from “You’re Makin’ Me High”) as well as the evening’s local talent Timeline and Mattilda Ho for extended enjoyment.

SWEATER BEATS w/RICO UNO, GENIE, JOLIN RAS, LECHANCE & TIGER – FEBRUARY 21st, FORTUNE SOUND CLUB

Our second HW&W signee and Happy Ending Friday on the list, the slowed down and “lushed out” bedroom jams of Sweater Beats seem to sweet-talk us even through their titles. On his debut four-track EP That Feel released on Symbols late last October, Antonio Cuna dropped three originals: “Do It For Me”, “Feel Me”, and “Love Me”, tunes which tipped a hat to two of Cuna’s biggest idols and sex icons of today, Timbaland and R. Kelly. Don’t miss out on local sex icons and openers the ReUp DJs Rico Uno and Genie, and in the Livestock Room, the Feel Good with Jolin Ras, LeChance and Tiger.
