After the four-day party had to be cancelled halfway through last year due to the Alberta June floods, the Sled Island Music & Arts Festival is set to rise from the silt, promising to be stronger than ever.
Continuing the ever-so-resilient attitude of Calgarians not letting rising waters dampen their spirit, Sled Island marks its eighth year with the fitting slogan, “Nobody rains on our parade.”
And according to a statement released today, the festival says that this Sledding parade will bring one of its most diverse line-ups to date.
Among the headliners include a rare appearance from U.K. space rockers Spiritualized, U.S. singer-songwriter Neko Case, party rock band Rocket From the Crypt, and David Byrne and Swans collaborator St. Vincent.
As well, Sledders can look forward to rocking with Bob Mould, Earthless, Touché Amoré, Chelsea Wolfe, and Joel Plaskett Emergency, who will be coming back after their 2013 gig was cancelled.
Atlanta hip hop legend-in-the-making Killer Mike is also coming, as well as Danish-Canadian boudoir-R&B duo Rhye.
Also look out for a set from Sled Island guest curator Kathleen Hanna of riot grrrl and The Julie Ruin fame.
The eighth Sled Island festival runs from June 18th to 22nd, with more than 250 events happening in 30 venues throughout Calgary’s downtown and inner city including shows, comedy acts, film screenings and art events.
Passes are on sale now on SledIsland.com and ticket sales for individual shows begin March 11 via the festival website and Ticketfly.
There will be more band announcements to come on April 2.
After facing losses of up to $200,000 due to last year’s flood, the Sled Island festival stayed afloat after nearly 70 per cent of pass holders answered its plea to forgo a pass refund or to reinvest the refund via an InvestYYC.com donation page, along with help and support from numerous organizations, artists and venues in Calgary’s local arts community.
