Sitka, Alaska based conceptual artist Nicholas Galanin has his third solo-show at Trench Contemporary Art. Home, Memory of Land and Spacepresents his 2013 series of monotypes entitled ‘Familiar Faces.’ The series draws upon personal, collective, and inherited concepts of home and land. Adopting the quick, repetitive monotype process allows for an arena of spontaneous creation. Galanin’s inky, smeared creatures and figures are both part of Galanin’s personal ancestral memory, but also part of a larger, haunting legacy.
