LA TI DA RECORDS
This Vancouver crew brings the savage old-school power pop on this slab. Knowing your history is key to making good R’N’R, and this trio exhibits it here. The band has now finished recording their second LP, so be sure look for it in the near future.
“Hate Myself + A Promise Is a Promise”
These three tracks from the Victoria combo are a ripping, churning blast of snotty teen pop; a slight nod to the Ramones is apparent and most welcome. They certainly have been around the block as three albums are available — the last two are on the Dirtnap label out of Portland.
From Brooklyn, NY, this combo deliver two quick blasts of smooth and groovy soul, and it is a treat. Recorded at the house of Daptone, it will make you swoon and shake. An album from them (and a visit) would be fabulous.
The Wild Ones
“Day Drunk” B/W “Come Around”
These ladies from Santa Cruz have a style that goes way back to the early ’60s, which is a delight. Both tracks sound like they came out of a jukebox in a classic film, with sweet voices and a bit of jangle.
“Liquor Store Gun Store Pawn Shop Church” 12” EP
This seven-piece Vancouver outfit cranks it up a notch on this, their first big record. Vocals are shared between members on these tracks, which sizzle like a good breakfast. Sweet soul grooving is the order of the day here, with pounding drums and keyboard making the room go crazy. “Night Gospel” is particularly charming with some excellent vocals and swinging style.
