GOING TO HELL, UNIVERSAL MUSIC CANADA
Cue the sexual tension, emotionally drenched guitar solos and naughty church girls. Lead singer Taylor Momsen — best known for her role as Jenny Humphrey on Gossip Girl — combines succulent vocals, spoken word and some screaming throughout The Pretty Reckless’s second album, Going to Hell. On the single “Heaven Knows,” Momsen, accompanied by a choir of schoolchildren, summon a depressive army of rejects chanting, “We belong way down below.”
Gory stories and pessimistic nods at sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll are systematically imbedded in the threads of Going to Hell. The Pretty Reckless have been known to make a statement and do so in an extensive, openly raw manner. Hiding the truth is often frowned upon throughout the album and apparently so are clothes. Momsen’s nude posing for the album cover pushes the line a little too far — a prominent arrow painted on her back directs the audience “down to hell,” which screams, “We’re trying too hard.” Sexual innuendos are a-plenty, from the orgasmic moans on “Follow Me Down,” to the obscure “Why’d You Bring a Shotgun to the Party,” The Pretty Reckless wind up an intricate horror movie for our goth pop-punk pleasure.
