Come Worry With Us! is a quiet little film about two musician parents trying to raise their new infant son while still retaining their creativity and functioning as members of a band. We are introduced to Jessica Moss and Efrim Menuck, a violinist and singer/songwriter who play as part of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra. Then, we are introduced to their toddler, Ezra.
Moss and Menuck bring Ezra along with them on an extended tour with their band, and the films chronicles this journey. There are moments of joy, as a tiny human life force is often inspiring and gleeful to have around on such an arduous journey. However, as the title suggests, even more time is spent documenting the fretting of Moss and Menuck. Among their concerns are the economics of bringing a child on tour – they must hire a nanny and tour bus, and as the band functions as a collective, they collectively bear the cost of this, as well.
At this point, the film very subtly addresses some deeper, vaguely political/philosophical issues. Ezra’s presence on tour calls into question the dynamic of the band as one whole collective, the struggle to make a living as a touring musician without compromising the integrity, the traditional roles of “mother” and “father,” and what those might look like, and certainly not least importantly, how becoming a mother really encompasses your life. The film is engaging without being heavy-handed, letting the people on screen go at their own pace. The punctuation of Thee Silver Mt. Zion’s music through scenes of practices and shows helps inspire an uplifting sort of melancholy, a vague hope that the future might not be so terrible if we have people to love and take care of.
