May is upon us, and heavy shows are abundant. So start your month off right by attending Garbage Daze II: The Return. The excellent punk/ hardcore/ powerviolence fest runs from Friday, May 2 to Sunday, May 4, and features a plethora of acts, including: Crazy Spirit (New York City), Pura Mania (Vancouver), Dead Weight (Seattle), The Rival Mob (Boston), Mueco (Montreal), Spectres (Vancouver), and Rhythm of Cruelty (Edmonton), alongside numerous others. Friday’s gig is at the National Music Centre (134 – 11 Ave. S.E.), Saturday will involve shows at The Skate Cafe (408 Manitou Rd. S.E.) and the Royal Canadian Legion (Alberta No. 1) Branch (116 – 7 Ave. S.E.), and Vern’s (622 – 8 Ave. S.W.), and Sunday’s gig will be at Vern’s. Tickets are available from Sloth Records and Lukes Drug Mart in Bridgeland.
The fifth round of the Wacken Metal Battle Calgary show. Occurring on Saturday, May 3 at Lord Nelson’s Bar and Grill (1020 – 8 Ave. S.W.), the event will feature Moosifix, Train Bigger Monkeys, Burning Effigy, Exit Strategy and Every Hour Kills. Tickets are $10 at the door, and this is the final round to decide on the last band that will make the finals. That same evening, head to The Skate Cafe for Profits of Crime, Crystal Mess, The Cadavor Dog, and Mass Control. Tickets are $10 at the door, beers are only $3.
On Thursday, May 8, Dickens Pub (1000 – 9 Ave. S.W.) will host a punk/metal crossover show featuring Calgary acts Crystal Mess, X-Ray Cat, and Pagans of Northumberland, alongside Regina’s Royal Red Brigade.
Tuesday, May 13 is simply amazing for new releases. First up, gorgeous black metal act Agalloch will unveil The Serpent and the Sphere via Profound Lore; one-man post black metal band Lantlôs will release Melting Sun via Prophecy; Teitanblood will unleash Death via The Ajna Offensive.
The final battle for the Calgary version of the Wacken Metal Battle will unfold on Saturday, May 17 at Vern’s (622 – 8 Ave. S.W.) As of press time, the winners have been Krepitus, False Flag, and Vile Insignia; those bands will perform alongside the winners of the April 26 and May 3 bouts. That same evening, Authority Zero, The Press Gang, Black Earth, and Torches To Triggers will perform. This will be the release party for punk/melodic hardcore act Torches.
We tried really hard, but alas, Japanese noise titan Merzbow was not answering his emails to discuss his upcoming performance at the Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club (109 – 7 Ave. S.W.) on Thursday, May 22. Also featuring Holzkopf and Botfly, this show will blast your eardrums. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, miss it.
Tuesday, May 27 will be excellent. Finnish black/death pranksters Impaled Nazarene will release Vigorous and Liberating Death via Osmose, the incomparable Mayhem will unveil their highly anticipated Season of Mist debut with Esoteric Warfare, doomsters Serpentine Path have their first on Relapse dubbed Emanations.
On Thursday, May 29, head to the Marquee Beer Market and Stage (4630 Macleod Tr. S.) for DevilDriver. Also featuring Whitechapel, Carnifex, and Revocation, the show starts at 6 p.m. and tickets range from $32-$35 plus service fees.
Finally, on Friday, May 30, don’t miss your opportunity to see Villainizer and Black Pestilence, who will be releasing their Dunerunner/Cyber Disarray split at Dickens Pub. A 12″ record with download card will be available at the show, which includes guest vocals by Valax on Side A, and guest vocals by Rob “The Arab Villain” on side B. Calgary bands Vile Insignia, Arsenal, and Hellborn Death Engines will also perform. Doors are at 8 p.m., show is at 9 p.m., and tickets are $10.
