Despite festival frenzy in full effect, lest we forget the talented local crews who have fought to make our scene the lush landscape of creativity, community and spirit that it is. Show your support and turn out to any of the events below for $20 or less per head.
MYLES AWAY / VASHO / J.F. KILLAH – JUNE 6, BACKSTAGE LOUNGE
Three better-known faces you would be hard-pressed to find. Headliner Myles Away has collected a steady stream of accolades since his first foray onto the scene in 2008, making short work of a historically slow climb through enthusiasm, dedication, and love of a great tune. His most recent adventure, running Smokey Crow Records, was alongside one of the gentlemen who first backed his musical career: NOG of Moontricks, and now through Smokey Crow they both pay it forward through promotion of fresh blood.
Although he’s better known for being the official SHAH party photographer, with a sturdy background in digital compositing and 3D visual projection Vasho Pekar is also one of the best visual artists in our scene. Now finally adding some audio to all that visual, he’s branched out into DJing, and you can bet he’ll be stellar at that too.
J.F. Killah slays the crowd every time, laying down massive tune after massive tune in a hybridized blend wholly her own. Her Bass Coast ’13 set exceeded all expectations and she hasn’t slowed down since.
THREADROOTS: A CELEBRATION OF FESTIVAL FASHION, MUSIC, ART AND PERFORMANCE – JUNE 13, CHAPEL ARTS
Last June, Commercial Drive welcomed Rabbit and Empee to their first permanent home after 10 years on the international festival circuit selling “Outlandish certified organic clothing designed especially for forest dancefloor celebration!” To celebrate their one-year anniversary, they’ve asked the host of Shambhala’s Grove Stage, Area One Events, to create a spectacle in expression designed to come as close as you can get to the festival experience while still inside the city. Hosted by Crystal Precious, featuring Andreilien (a.k.a. Heyoka), with support from Application, Goopsteppa, Riiivr, and Kimmy K as well as performance and visual art by Subscura, Omnika in Motion, Ariel Amara, Phresha, Mugwort, Patrick Garramone – come dressed in your festie best!
BACK IN THA DAY 2 – JUNE 13, STUDIO EAST
The Homebreakin’ crew need no real introduction, as some of the most passionately talented neon Spandexed men around. However, it’s not just their sick fashion sense but their dedication to spotlight talent both new and old that keeps them at the forefront of what’s happening. This themed party is no exception: an old school hip hop jam calling for all party monsters to pull out their 45s and Adidas, featuring a diverse spread of selectas from Kilo Cee and DJ Dunks to Spilt Milk and MyKro. See you there!
