Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson star in this violent tale of a future where gangsters and thugs roam the desolate Australian outback. From David Michod, who directed Animal Kingdom, The Rover will be an amazingly gritty and fast-paced modern gangster film. June 13.


Kevin Smith – The People’s Choice Night

It’s your chance to pick which movie will play at the Rio! The People’s Choice Night is monthly, and it’s a fun way to feel involved with a local theatre. In June, they’re celebrating Kevin Smith in anticipation of his live appearance at the Rio on June 22. Via, you can vote between the films Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma. The most popular film will play on June 17 at 7 p.m.

Vancouver biennale cinefest LIVE program

Oliver Stone will launch the cinefest LIVE program, which aims to celebrate film in the context of contemporary arts in public spaces. There are two events that provide opportunities to engage: the Master Class featuring Oliver Stone and An Evening with Oliver Stone. Both take place on Saturday, June 14, with the Master Class from 1 p.m.-5 p.m., and the evening event at 8 p.m. The Master Class includes speakers Marc Stephenson, Taylor Hill and Gary Hawes, a screening of Oliver Stone’s first short film Last Year in Vietnam, and a Master Class discussion on the topic “Your First Film.” An Evening with Oliver Stone will have a screening of The Untold History of the United States – Bush II & Obama: The Age of Terror, a moderated discussion and Q&A with Oliver Stone, and a presentation of the Vancouver Biennale Sorel Etrog Lifetime Achievement Award. 2001: A Space Odyssey & Solaris

The Pacific Cinematheque is screening a double-bill of two landmark science-fiction masterpieces from June 11-14. 2001 is arguably Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, and Solaris is often referred to as “the Soviet 2001.” Check for details.
